publishing a book for the first time?

ok I am half way done with my novel that I have been writing for some time now and I would like to know the process for publishing it and getting publishers involved and what not. My novel is going to be fiction and will be a potentially controversial novel because of the corrupt U.S. government's dealings with Al Queda. So I am not rich, so I need some a cheap way to turn my manuscript into a novel. :D My name is Nicole Ricketts...look for it in store in the next year or so!
