PS3 optical audio problems with panasonic surround sound?

I have a Panasonic SC-BT300, tech specs here: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Video/Blu-ray-Disc-Players/Technical-Specification/model.SC-BT300.T#ts . I am connecting my ps3 via HDMI to my HDTV for video only and ps3 to the SC-BT300 via Toslink (optical) for audio. The SC-BT300 definitely supports Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS as you can see in the specs. However, when watching some movies and playing some games with DD 5.1 selected, I get cracking and popping on my rear surround sound speakers (i.e. on certain killstreaks such as the harrier strike in MW2 I always get it. And when I selected DTS only for games like God of War 3 that specifically state they support DTS on the box, I get no sound whatsoever. I also have my comcast hd cable box connected to the SC-BT300 via optical and play blu-ray movies in the SC-BT300 and I don't have the same problems with either of those and sound is always great. Its just the PS3. I've tried checking the boxes for DD 5.1 by itself, DTS by itself, both together in the PS3 sound settings and still get the same problems. Even tried changing the settings in the movie or music settings (whichever it is) where you can change the BD/DVD sound and audio output to bitstream or Linear PCM, and I've messed with it on each of those. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm pretty much forced to use DD 5.1 when playing games to have surround sound because DTS doesn't on most games, and its so annoying to be watching a movie or playing a game and all of the sudden the speakers start crackling or popping extremely loud. Thanks.
