PS3 not playing videos, pictures or music via media stream or usb stick?

i have a 80gb ps3 and when i first got it i was able to use music pic and video to play and stream. Now i am not able to. Im using vista but i think the problem is the ps3. Even when i put the formats on a usb stick shows up as no track/videos. ONLY thing i can think of is that i installed yellowdog software on my ps3 and i using the ethernet cable to the ps3 and my laptop is on wifi. Any thoughts of how to correct it?
 
well it doesnt matter if your ps3 is wired and your laptop isnt, as long as your on the same network.

but when u installed yellow dog that might have messed up some files on the playstation operating system.

but try to put a usb stick with a song on it and press triangle and select display all and the songs should pop up
