Yes they are very useful because of talking online with your friends and making strategies. You also don't get to hear people's headsets noise coming from your tv

Call of Duty World at War
Grand Theft Auto IV

Hell yeah they are, why would you play a game online if you cant communicate and trash talk people. your missing out if you dont get one.
