Hi,

I want to come off my Prozac 20mg a day that ive been taking for about 2 years now.

I was told it wasnt addictive, but when i reduced it i felt awful. Now im scared to ever come off it. Anyone else have same worries?

My doctor was reluctant to switch me from Prozac, but my neurologist did the job, I took Prozac one morning and started Cyrabalta (30mg) the next. No problems whatsoever! 2 weeks later he increased the cyrabalta to 60 mg and I feel GREAT. It has helped me cope with neuropathy pain in my feet...the pain still comes and goes, but not nearly as bad. Perhaps your doctor thought you had to totally stop Prozac before starting something else...but this immediate changeover sure worked for me.
Good luck!

When you say you feel awful, do you mean awful from side effects or awful as in very anxious? I find that many antidepressants or antianxiety medications will give you some withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking them. When I used to take Cyrabalta, I would be very drowsy, even after taking it for a while. When I stopped taking it, I had a ton of energy and had a hard time sleeping and would get night sweats. I liked having the energy, but it was frustrating to not be able to get much sleep from being so wound up. It wore off within a couple of weeks and I felt back to normal. You should start to feel a bit better too! If your anxiety is creeping back, you should definitely talk to your doctor about that. Did you go off of Prozac for any reason? I also suggest very slowly going off of a medication. I used to take 60mg Cyrabalta, then cut back to 30mg, then took it every other day.. so I slowly went off of it. I'm currently taking Prozac (20 mg as well) but haven't stopped taking it and am still new to it.

Prozac has been fine for me, but i just dont want to be on it forever.

Im still quite anxious, so i know if i do come off it i will be worse. As for going over to another med, i dont see the point as my aim is to be off all meRAB, so if i have to be on something then i suppose i should just stay on Prozac.

Aother question... today ive felt really low and short of breath, im sure its the antibiotics im on which are giving me stomach probs, im sure that if my stomach isnt 100% it makes my shortness of breath worse, any ideas on that?

There really is no easy way to wean off of an antidepressant. Your doc will probably lower your dosage from 20 mg to 10 mg for a month, then 10 mg to 5 mg for a month, then go off. Even if you wean off super slow, there are changes going on in your mind and body. It's not easy. Just make sure you absolutely do not stop taking it cold turkey, as that is very bad for you.

Just an update really....

Ive been tapering off of Prozac for past 3 weeks again. They are right when they say it has a half life, as it takes a while for your body to realise there isnt as much in it anymore.

Ive been fine , it lulls you into this false sense for first 2 weeks because of the half life, then it seems to go boom!! not really bad, but im on them once every three days now, so im cutting right down and i think my body just realised it too !!

Today has been a badish day, my shortness of breaths have been quite acute today, thats all i take Prozac for, but obviously it is anxiety. Im really hoping i can make it this time and control this without them. My Doctor said to contact her should i get in trouble with it, but im trying hard to do this myself, but sensibly. Dont let anyone tell you Prozac isnt addictive, the body get very used to it and the withdrawal isnt great.:)

I think i may be going cold turkey. WHO SAID PROZAC WASNT ADDICTIVE? :(

Im down to 20mg every 3 days now and its been 3 weeks since i started to come off it. Today has been a bad day. I'm short of breath and have been all day. I am soooooooooooooo tired out from trying to get a full lung of air every minute or so. Im sure this isnt doing my heart any good. I get sleep apnea and last night i woke up gasping as i wasnt breathing for i dunno how long.

Im just about holding it together but im determined to come off these prozacs. I was reading that Prozac is more designed for depression, im not depressed, im ANXIOUS or this anxiety makes me short of breath most of the time, its not like a panic attack they come and go. Mine last hours and days.

Im so fed up, i dont know what to do anymore. :(
