When does Prozac start working? How many days/weeks to feel it? Any adjustment side effects or anything?

I started feeling it the same day, but most people say to give it about three weeks. Some people take as long as two months to start feeling medications work. I had an overall calm and happy feeling come over me out of nowhere a couple of hours after taking it, so I am pretty sure it had to be from the Prozac. By the way, I take a generic version, not the name brand.

I didn't seem to have any side effects at all at first. After a few days I started to feel the drowsiness from it, but it hasn't gone away after a few months. It isn't severe though, so I don't plan on stopping it. I am usually tired anyway!

The trickiest side effect that I developed a couple of weeks into taking Prozac was acid reflux. I noticed that for some reason I had a hard time keeping the pill down. I would drink a lot of water and would feel it stuck in my throat still. I believe it would sit in my throat for too long and cause throat irritation, heartburn, and the acid reflux. It was difficult to exercise without vomiting a little bit and it was uncomfortable to eat fruits and vegetables. I started turning my head to the side as I take the pill and it helps it go down, or I wrap it in some bread. The plastic capsule seems to get stuck for some reason, even though I don't have this problem with any other pill. Now I take Prozac at night instead of morning. No more acid reflux! Taking it at night gives it some time before I start eating in the morning, so the food doesn't bother me. It still works well and probably helps with the drowsiness.

As for my weight, I am happy to say that Prozac has not caused any gain! This was my main worry as I try very hard to stay in shape. I work out hard and eat a good amount and Prozac hasn't affected me, so I am thrilled about that.

Good luck and I hope it works well for you!

I just realized that this thread was from you as well as another post I replied to by you. I really hope Prozac works out better for you than Lexapro. I remeraber learning about Lexapro from my doctor but didn't want to go on it because of weight gain being a common side effect. She said Prozac was the one most of her patients seemed very happy with, with the least complaints of side effects. That's why I chose to try it! I do take Xanax only as needed as well. I only need it maybe once a week tops and that's it. It's just a little something extra in case I'm very anxious one day. My doctor didn't want it to be my main medication since it can be addictive.

I really want to try prozac, but my doctor said it would make my anxiety worse. I am taking lexapro right now, and it is wonderful for anxiety, but it makes me sooo tired. I am also breaking out in a rash again, and am pretty sure it is from the lex. This is the 2nd time to try it. Lex doesn't make me hungry, but it sure does make me lazy, so I can see how people gain weight on it.

talum, are you taking it mainly for anxiety?

Ive been on Prozac for over 2 yrs now. It didnt affect me much for the first 8 weeks. Then i felt incredibly tired and i think thats stayed with me mostly.

I also cant sleep a whole night right through since i started it either, it def. disturbs my sleep.

Its helped in that its made me less firey tempered, but its only taken a little of the edge off my shortness of breath attacks.

Im not trying for the 2nd time to come off it. 1st time I halved my dosage and felt dreadful. So went back to 20mg a day again. Up till now (its been a week) im ok at 20mg every other day, next week im going to every three days, so i hope i can come off it, because to be honest i dont feel myself at all, and havent from the 8th week really.

It took a long while for mine to work. And after a few months I was still anxious... and had a really bad panic episode! So the dr. raised my dose to 40mg. And it has helped a lot! I do feel tired...but, not as terrible as experiencing terrible panic attacks all the time. Its my third time on prozac, and I now realize I need to stay on it for a while... because it helps so much.

My BIGGEST side effect is it makes me a lot less tolerant of heat. If its stuffy or hot I have to cool down immediately! I also was very dizzy the first few weeks of the dose increase, but that subsided.

For the most part... its a very helpful drug.
