Protecting the surface of a painted desk?

I'm working on a restored desk but the wood is crappy so I'm painting it. Can polyurethane be placed over a high gloss paint? I need something the will harden and protect the desk from bumps and scratches, at least the top of the desk? I want to use a high gloss paint and I'm too poor to afford to get a sheet of glass.
Really, I don't want glass. I don't know where to get it.
Also I want to preserve the glossy-ness of the paint.

I sprayed a desk with a couple coats of Val-spar by Pratt Lambert. It was a Marine Finish. It left a nice tough finish. Before you use something do a test to make sure the paint doesn't do something weird under it like crinkle.
