According to the specs, I am suppose to get 18 mpg. (city) I am getting about ten. What could be the problem? I just bought this vehicle
it is a 2000 ford ranger XL 4X4

specs was for track with best possible fuel
just got it have you done a tune up change the oils done any maintenance to it.

since you dont know when or if its been done that like first thing one does after buying a use car or truck

have you added any fuel treatment once you do all that tune up fuel treatment oil changes check air in tires
then decide on which brand and octane fuel gets the best mileage with each person wil be different as each car is

to check that you fill up with highest octane at place you stop most set mileage write it down drive til it need refilling at same place use next lower octane one that gets best mileage right at that place only then up Street to next place do same thing do this with two or more places going away from house and two places coming back to House then you know best fuel for your truck knowing that
then you go type
how to save fuel
learn how to drive light learn how and when to gas when to brake save a lot
not many get just what its listed to get which is a average is not a set some get better knowing how to drive lighter some get worse read up on it do what i said might learn how to control more of it but avg is lower than what company list for that reason they do it on a track with best fuel one can get or a machine by one or two people and you as driver has to work it out your self

Ford XL what? Its winter time your mileage will be lower. Ratings are a 1 size fits all. Some get lower some get higher depending on where you live and how you drive.

Make sure your tire pressures are correct, plugs and wires are good, air filter is clean, etc.

Are you in 4 wheel all the time? (I don't know if it is AWD) If you can go to just 2 wheel drive, you will notice a big difference in gas mileage.

Fuel Filter replacement will help.
Check manual for in city. 18 mpg in city is pretty good for gas guzzlers.
How long since your last tune up? Tuneups include or should include carburetor and fuel injection adjustments. IF too rich you waste gas.
Check tire pressure. low pressure causes poor mileage.
