Okay, so this is more of a post/rant than a question, but your feedback is certainly welcome. i have just finished reading some rather offensive replies to another question pertaining to tipping and felt the need to shine some light on the ignorant thinking of people who obviously have no business showing their uncultured pigheaded butts in public. So here goes, the low down, the trying hard to stick to the point and not rant list of proper dining etiquette from an experienced waitress.
1. Be polite to the hostess. These are usually kids, and this is commonly their first job. Do not give them a hard time. If you have an issue, ask for a manager.
2. When your waitress greets you, reply, do not hold up your finger and continue to talk on your phone, or just stare at her, that is rude. period.
ORDERING-
- speak clearly, don't speak with a mouth full of bread or your appetizer. These are simple practices of good manners.
- do not subject the poor server as to how much your last server screwed up your order. that's insulting. It's not their fault and you are insinuating that because your last server was an idiot, they must be too. Give them a chance to mess up before you condemn them.
-if you know you want tobasco, your 35 and you always ask for tobasco, ASK FOR TOBASCO. Of course if you happen to forget, it is your servers job to get it for you, and with a good attitude, but sending them on pointless treks back and forth to the kitchen is only wasting their time when they could be spending it providing you with better service.
ATTITUDE
we understand that you have problems in your life. we understand you may have just had a terrible day at work, but must you take it out on your poor server who will likely get fired just for giving you a dirty look for being an asshole?
We, just like you, get in fights with our spouses, have problem children, and have to put up with jerk bosses, but we still have to put on a smile and "serve" you. Give us a break, we're hoping to make your day better, so don't make ours worse.
TIPPING
some may still not know that in most states a servers minimum wage is around $3.50, and on top of this, they generally have to pay a standard 3% of their tips to pay for the bus, host, and bar staff's wages who also make this crappy $3.50. So, let's say you tip them 10% on a $50 check, you are giving them $5, but they are walking with $3.50. is this your fault? No. but you should be aware that this person is paying others out of her own pocket. 18% is standard for good service, more if your server really went out of the way and wowed you.
-If you sit at a servers table for a prolonged period of time, chatting with you mistress(wink), conducting business, whatever, you are preventing that person from getting another guest, thus preventing them from making their money. Take this into consideration when tipping.
If nothing else, remember these two key points
1. WE ARE PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU!!! We are not perfect, nor do we claim to be, we make mistakes, we forget things sometimes, and we have bad days.
2I once had a man throw his plate on the floor b/c his steak was overcooked, and another threaten never to come back because his baked potato had a bruise in it. IT'S JUST FOOD!!! settle the fuck down. Eating out is supposed to be an enjoyable experience to share with your friends , family , and co-workers. No matter how you try to justify it, going off the deep end over an undercooked steak is ...well, just plain nuts!!!
To all who humored me and read this, thanks, to those who didn't, I hope I never have to wait on you!!!
