One of the ideas about belonging in Tim Burtons ‘Edward Scissorhands’ is that people who are different are going to find it difficult to belong. Edward wants to be liked and accepted by everyone but he realises that he is different. Edward’s physical appearance, his child-like tone and his total dependence on other people makes him different from everyone else therefore he finds it difficult to belong. Another idea about belonging in the film is that the cost of belonging is individuality, principles and values. Edward is forced to conform to the norm in order to belong , and by doing this he loses his individuality. This is highlighted when he changes from his original black costume to ‘normal’ clothes.
