Hi
I have had back problems ever since I was in my early 20s but just ignored the problems until the pain became worse 12 years ago I was sent for a M R I scan and diagnosed with arthritis , three prolapsed discs , possible nerve damage in my luraber spine a bone scan also found Osteoporosis ( I have Scoliosis and a Kyphosis on my neck which is very prominent) I have had traction and physio , all of which just caused more pain, my neck was never investigated until two shoulder operations which did not help a problem I suffer with my arms, I was sent for another M R I scan this time on my neck, afterwarRAB I was told I had three prolapsed discs in my neck with nerve damage associated with the same discs, I have heard that surgery will not be offered because of the amount of disc & nerve damage .

Does anyone know if this is true ...has anyone else had similar back problems
and been told surgery will not go ahead because of the amount of problems

Thanks

Hi just wanted to say iam so sorry i understand your pain i also suffer daily with chronic pain and it can get the best of you,but i dont understand why you are looking for more surgery since it has already just caused more pain, the one thing many surgeons do not warn their patients about is adhesions, which is scar tissue that is caused buy any surgery,it is the major cause of alot of peoples pain, and once you have had the surgery you can not turn back time.Have you tried pain management?I have spondy with pars defect with severe spinal stenosis,on both sides worse on the left osteoporsis.bulge in c5 and c6, and the list goes on,some days i have really bad thoughts but my dr is working hard to manage my pain, and just lately he has upped my morphine to 60 mil.and iam starting to get around much better, please look into managing your pain i would hate to see you end up with more pain.i hope you begin to feel better, marywoo.

Hi Marywoo,
I understand what you are saying but the reason why i would love the chance to have my disc problems sorted is this 4 yrs ago I was sent to a different hospital for my bone scan and they actually picked up a long standing quite serious liver condition which is genetic ( I have never been a heavy drinker and did not drink regularly , I'm married with 4 kiRAB ..they always came first ,so I would only drink once or twice a year and 3 pints and I would be sloshed' I never understood why until this showed-up) anyway I was referred to a liver specialist and I was given a liver bi-opsey the results were not good my liver was in a bad way with scarring and nodules and saturated with iron the
condition is Hemochromatosis .I immediately stopped eating food with high levels of Iron and no more drinking plus I was sent for weekly vein sections ( a pint of blood was taken once a week for 36 consecutive weeks ...now my liver has improved vastly , I still have a liver scan every year just to keep a check .That's when I thought some conditions can improve if you try , that's why I agreed to both shoulder operations I had to try !I am at a point in my life where all my kiRAB ( now adults ) have moved out with their own homes two have moved abroad for work , my wife and I are not 50 yet !
this is the time in our lives where we should be traveling and just enjoying our time together , I have cervical Spondy and Ankllosing and arthritis in my knees hips neck and back & hanRAB ( I was told the Hemochromatosis caused the Osteoporosis and Arthritis so soon in life I cannot get about anymore by myself because of Neuro problems ( vibrations or the wind against my legs or the quilt has the same effect you wouldn't believe ) plus I fall asleep without warning I can be talking one minute then asleep the next it can happen anytime anywhere)
I have tried the pain management path with morphine and pain killers and physio / traction. I now use painkillers /muscle relaxants /bone tablets / anti -inflammatory tablets
I have been prescribed a medication which I take twice a week , I get 1 & 1/2 days pain relief off each treatment so 2- 3 days of the week I actually get some relief which is great .But I might take the chance if offered back surgery if not for me for my wife , we were so looking forward to this time of our life but it has not turned out the way we planned
