Production Codes

Hey, I apologize for creating a thread in order to ask this question, but it?s something that has always perplexed me. Where do people find production codes for animated programs? I know that some networks air animated programs out of order, and people always bring up production codes as a means of determining the intended order, but I can?t figure out where people find them. I?ve looked through the episodic credits of various animated programs and the information never seems to be there, so this whole thing has me really confused.

I used to edit a decent amount of guides over at that website and my own personal experiences have caused me to believe that most people contribute fake production codes. I left that site back in 2006, though, so I don’t know if anything has improved. Regardless, for the ones that are valid, I wish somebody could enlighten us as to where they can be found at. Even Toon Zone’s Animation Wiki permits episodes to be listed in the order they were produced, rather than the order they were aired, which seems to imply that production codes exist somewhere.

I always figured someone who worked on a show, whether it be a big-time person or an intern, would type down the production codes on one site after airing and it would get spread throughout websites.

I mean, Billy West checks his own Wikipedia page. So you know. :0

For many shows, the production number can be found on the official websites (which list episodes in production order more often than airdate) or from archives from official press releases.

It's VERY important to note that usually, numbering like 101, 102, 201, 301, etc. isn't the real production number (which is the numbers I'm sure most of you see in guides like tv.com). In many cases, it's simply an easy way to denote the order in which the episodes went into production and where in a season they air.

For example, the first episode of season 4 of Teen Titans is episode 401, however, the real production number is 257-494, which was revealed as an in-joke in the episode title.
