Problems with my Motorola Modem?

Ok, when i set my NAT to public It always shuts off in a certain amount of time. When i changed it back to private, It never shuts off. Why is this? Because i hear that public (or Open) NAT is better for xbox live. How can i fix it so when i change it back to public it doesn't shut off? Thank you
