Problems with mazda 6 fan/heater/ac?

Recently, when I drove our '03 Mazda 6 I guess I damaged something in the center control thing for the radio and fan system. We were carrying boards and at some point I had to brake hard and couldn't stop the boards from sliding forward fast enough. So the boards hit the control panel thingy. So now a few buttons aren't working anymore (you know how they have little orange lights on, and some of them are now off) I can still control a few of the buttons on the radio/cd player (except for two on the right) but all control buttons for the fan are not working anymore. So I can't switch between ac on/off, cabin and outside airflow and I can't turn on my rear defogger. Also since it's cold now and I have to turn the heater on, it's not working. I can hear air blowing, and when I touch the fan I can feel some warmth, but it's just not blowing out the way it's supposed to. It started off with the airblow working for about 5-10 mins but now it's not working anymore at all. (well sometimes it kick on but that's rare) According to the mechanic it's something about a control module and it has to be replaced. Well right now we're pretty broke because we just moved etc. So I'm not sure when we can take it in to get it fixed, because it's not cheap. Is there anything that we can do to fix it? Is there a somewhat easy fix to it? My husband is pretty handy with such things and has fixed our cars before so if it's somewhat easy im sure he can do it! :)
Thanks
