Problems with lagging/freezing with computer game, please help?

I just bought sims 3 (new), and after about only 5 minutes of playing it for the first time, the game began to lag and then would freeze for a second, and then the screen would go black, but I could still move the mouse cursor around. I hit escape multiple times, and waited to see if anything would happen, but I had no choice but to just shut down my computer. I restarted it, and the problem still persists.
My computer usually doesn't give me any problems, in general or with games, and the cd for the game is brand new, so I know that's not it.

Any ideas as to what it may be? Thanks
 
Make sure that your computer meets the system requirements to run a game such as the sims 3, this sounds like your computer is not capable to run it.
