Problems with Adobe Acrobat Reader my OS is Windows Vista Home Premium?

All of the sudden, my Adobe Reader won't work. It opens a window for the document, but nothing appears. I tried updating it, but it says that an application is using it so it can't update. I don't have any programs or windows open, and restarted the computer to make sure that no processes are going on, but it still won't work. I tried to repair the program using the Adobe shortcut on my desktop, and that didn't work either. I also used the restore option on the computer and rolled it back to an earlier date. I called Toshiba, the maker of my notebook, and they said I need to reload the OS with the recovery disk. I don't know if it's related, but Internet Explorer gives me the " a problem has occured with IE and it needs to close" everytime I use the computer. I reinstalled Internet Explorer, but I still get this same message. Can you help me, do I really need to use the recovery disk?
