Problems with a 1995 vtec honda civic, maybe distributor?

I have a 1995 honda civic EX VTEC 1.5l. I went to start it one day and it kind of started then sputtered and died, when I tried to start it again it sounded like a sewing machine, for lack of a better description of the sound it made. My first thought after releasing a few choice words was my timing belt busted.

My brother pulled off the distributor cap and told me to crank it, the rotor spins so as far as we can tell the belt is not busted, he said maybe it slipped, teeth broken or whatever. I have replaced the timing belt before so its not very old and it's my wife's car so she doesn't drive it rough. We get no spark from the plug either so we are at a loss.

I read up on the distributor and found that the ignitor modules on these models tend to overheat and eventually burn out. My brother called parts shops and found the modules to be about 80 bucks. I've found new, complete distributors for my car online for $150. I just want to see if anyone may know what may be the problem may be. I figured I would just get the whole distributor, but don't want to spend the money on a part I may not need.

So I would really like some help on this, sorry for the long description but I tried to include as much info as possible.
