problems starting a 1968 ford f 100?

like mentioned a 1968 ford f 100 with a 360 v8. i had to put in the distruutor exactly like book said finding top dead center and what not ive checked the firing order a hundred times. heres the issue it cranks acts like it wants to fire but wont im getting fuel to the carb and spark to the plug but just wont fire and acts like it wants to but just cranks and canks and cranks and occasional backfires do i need to set timing how would i on this engine anything besides timing? thanks
 
There are 2 top dead center one for compresion and one for exaust. Try pulling distributer and spin crank to top dead center and put distributer back in.
 
What about your timing CHAIN? Had a 74 Ford Galaxie with a 351 Windsor and when leaving a store got in and tried to start it and all it was crank, crank, crank with no turnover. My husband had to replace the timing chain.
