problems about the hydrolic clutch on a 1996 ford ranger?

i noticed the place you fill the hydrolic clutch with brake fluid was empty--i tried refilling it but then the clutch wouldn't reshift--i have tried bleeding the system with the help of another person--we got lots of clear brake fluid--but the clutch pedal just goes down still and i cannot shift the truck--i am wondering if the if the fluid is bypassing a valve or something or do i need to just start replacing the slave things etc--thanks for any information anyone can send
