problem with yahoo chatting?

while playing spades in yahoo my partner said i was doing a good job. i typed in thank you very much, but it did not show up. is there something i have to do so i can chat with my p or something i have to download? do not want my partner thinking i do not want to talk. where can i get help for this problem. would a change in my email address have anything to do with this?
