I have been taking Nexium 40mg a day for over 2 years, and I have had no GERD symptoms whatsoever as long as I stay on the meRAB.

I just refilled my scrip a week ago, and for the past 6 days am having reflux issues again for the first time since starting the Nexium. This coincides to within one day of starting the new refill.

Nothing in my diet, or lifestyle has changed.
Has anyone ever heard of getting a "bad batch" per se of a prescription?
All of the markings on the pills are correct BTW.

I am confused as to what is going on.
Thanks.

I've never heard of a "bad batch", but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

What I have heard of is people's body suddenly not taking very well to drugs, especially GERD drugs. I bet if you ask everyone on this board, they have tried almost every drug dealing with GERD/LPR, either because what they were taking never worked, or what they were taking suddenly stopped working or ceased being as effective.

I started on nexium once a day, worked for a while, then wasn't quite as effective. Dr put me on Nex 2/day, which worked for a while. Then Dr added Zantac150/day+2Nex/day, which worked for a while, then carafate was added to mix. Now I'm back down to 2Nex/day.

You could also have developed H.plori(sp?) bacteria recently.

It's hard telling why these particular pills stopped working effectively.

Thanks for the input.
As you can tell I just signed up for the board today.

I am aware that drugs can cease to work after a period of time.
This is all I have ever been on since having my initial issue years ago.
They did an EGD?, and found evidence of severe irritation. I had a biopsy taken to check for Barrets (sp), and it was negative at that time.

I was put on Nexium at that point and have been good to go until the past week. I just found it curious that it happened at exactly the same time I started my refill.

The H.Pilori issue I am not very familiar with although I did mention it to my gastro doc.
He seemed to feel it is nothing more than a myth. I have never researched it further due to that statement.

I realize that I have some bad habits concerning this,.......I often eat late at night, and go to bed shortly afterwarRAB.
I am also a beer drinker, which I have heard is really bad for a person suffering from GERD. I drink no other alcohol though.
I gave up coffee, and very spicy fooRAB,........never have eaten "fatty" fooRAB.

I was simply throwing this out here to see if others have ever experienced the same thing. My pharmacy is going to replace my remaining 23 pills.
I guess I will see what happens.

One other thing,.......the past few days I have had the "runs" several times.
Don't know if it is a bug going around, or tied to this somehow?
Thanks again.

hi, i've just recently started having the same problem and was wondering why, i've been on nexium for nearly 4 years and all of a sudden its just not working, hope u manage to get an answer soon, i know how it feels to suffer from this and its not very nice. Best of luck

They replaced my pills, but in the interim I went to Prilosec OTC.
I realize it is virtually the same drug as Nexium. I am doing the 14 day course of that, and then I will see what happens.
At that point I will start back on the Nexium I guess.

So far it has eased back off, and as long as I sleep propped up on 3 pillows at night, I haven't had anymore of the wonderful "mouthful of acid" at night.

This GERD stuff really stinks,.......I guess you folks know that though!;)

I have tried several times in the past to go off of the Nexium, and within 2 days it comes back worse than ever. I think you even get a bit of a rebound effect per se, where the stomach is pumping out more acid than normal.
At least it seems that way with me. I hate to live on ANY type of drug, but I guess I have no choice under the circumstances.

My major problem has always been at night. I will go to bed around 11 PM, and most times it would be 3 to 4 AM I would turn over on my side, and wake up from a small "burp", and then have my throat fill up with what feels like battery acid.
Sorry for the description, but that is what happens to me. Before I started the Nexium the same thing would happen during the day if I bent over to pick something up. I had a chronic sore throat, and a "swollen" feeling at the base of my throat.

Anyway, I will check back in a bit later on and report on what is happening.
Thanks

I've been on nexium for 3 years and haven't had any problems. Occasionally I'll get a flare up and the Doc doubles my dose for 2 months. He says it takes about 2 months to heal. I recently cut it down to every 2nd day and am still feeling well, be aware it can cause a vitamin B deficiency. If you haven't already, try putting a couple of bricks under the head of your bed. I found this worked much better than the pillows.
