problem with my PC, it doesn't recognise my external h/disk or flash drive. i would

sure appreciate any advise? whenever i insert a flash drive my computer wont show anything. It gives the normal beep sound that it makes whenever i used to do this but now it doesn't show a thing. Also whenever i insert my external h/disk all it doesn't recognise it. i have tried to fix it by using the Add hardware (control panel) but still nothing. Please Help.
