I have two guppy fish and i have noticed a small rip in one's tail. I started out with four guppy fish and the other two died around two months ago from what we thought was tail rot. I read on another question to get melafix. I was wondering if anyone has had success with that product or has any other solution. Also can you add it to the water while the fish are in there or do I need to take them out and change the water.

A tear in the fin sounds like ICK or a fungus. Very common. Do a 25 to 35 percent water change first. The best treatment is Quick Cure (malachite green) it comes in a tiny bottle. Just follow directions for your tank size and continue treatment for up to a week. Remove all carbon filters during treatment but the bio sponge filters can stay. This always works for all my fish. Keeping the temp at 80 degrees will help prevent another outbreak as well. Oh and yes leave the fish in during treatment.

melafix is useless and my lfs said so too. Just add a pinch of aquarium salt to the water so no other secondary infections will set in. If it gets worse use 1/2 teaspoon per-gallon of water for 2 weeks.

Not to worry it will heal

melafix is actually excellent for split tails-it's not much good for anything else though. if it's a clean split then use it(just add to the water with the fish in), if it's ragged or has white edges then you need fin rot medication. you need to check ammonia and nitrite levels as it sounds like they may not be ideal.
