My Betta jumped out of his tank (5 gallon) a week or so ago while I was asleep. I woke up and found him on the floor so I don't know how long he was out of water.. Either way after I put him back he was floating and having a hard time swimming downwards, but he was fine the next day.

Since then, every time I feed him (a Betta pellet) he will bloat and start floating again. I usually feed him in the evening and he is ok by the time I wake up the next morning.. but still wondering why this is happening. Would it be because of an injury that happened while out of water or should I get new food? Thanks!

PS. I have a lid on the tank now so it doesn't happen again.
Whenever he is not being fed he is fine. During the day he will swim around the tank as if nothing was wrong with him at all

Hello,
This sounds very minor, i wouldn't not worry about this to much, your betta has probably hit the floor pretty hard and probably has some sort of bruise and my guess is that it hurts to. It probably has problems swimming because of this bruise, and that is probably why it isn't swimming so much, or acting in his/her normal behavior. I would give it a couple of days just to recover and then i am sure he/she will be fine and back to his/her normal self! But don't stop feeding your betta; just because he/she isn't eating the food does not mean that you should stop putting the food in or you might kill it by doing so.
P.S = I am glad to hear that you now have a lid for you tank :)

Hope I Helped You + Good Luck, :) !

he might have injured his swim bladder when he fell. since he's fine when he's not being fed there is a big chance of an eventual recovery. however, even if he doesn't recover there is no need to worry. he can live a normal life in spite of the floating after feeding. I have a goldfish with permanent swim bladder problems, he's happy and healthy and sometimes works up enough energy to scoot around the tank (his problem is sinking not floating). on his good days he can reach the surface for a little.

anyway, the 5gallon tank shows you obviously care about him, and that care will help his chances of recovery. so make sure you're keeping up with your 25% weekly water changes.
