problem with 90 Honda civic?

I'm driving a 90 Honda Civic...So I was driving down the highway and suddenly the car began backfiring from the carburetor and then died. When I tried to start it again all it does is crank for a few seconds and then backfire again from the Carburetor. I actually got it started once or twice, for VERY short periods of time. I replaced the distributor and the carb and no go..Any ideas?
