Problem with 04 Mazda 3 starting?

A few days ago, my Mazda 3 would turn over but not start. Later that night I was given advice to try to start it with the gas cap off and it worked (not sure if it was a coinsidence). When it started there was an initial poof of smoke. Have driven it for two days since then and no smoke. Took it into a shop the next day and they could not re-create the problem or find anything wrong. Now the check engine light is on. About 12K miles ago the purge valve was replaced. Could this be the problem again? Thanks
 
Sounds like u had some built up in the engine and when u saw the puff of smoke out the tail pipe, sounds like u blew out the built up.........probably why they cannot repeat it.....

May be a fuse going bad giving you the engine light......take it to the mazda dealer....they would know the best on what type of issues to look for...
