Problem removing the front sprocket on a Schwinn bicycle.?

How do you remove the front chain drive sprocket on a Schwinn bicycle? (not sure about the year, but it's a 'Collegiate' model). I removed the non-drive pedal, unscrewed the slotted cap at the base of the crank arm, then I removed the nut behind it. I thought the crank arm would then either slide off or unscrew, but it's really on there TIGHT. Do I need a special tool to get the crank arm off? Also, where on the bike can I locate the date it was manufactured? Thanks in advance for your help.

The sprocket slips over the crank arm. The sprocket has a large hole in the center and a smaller hole that goes over a cast in pin on the crank arm. If you have the nut and washer behind it off , the sprocket should come off. If it's stuck, spray with WD 40. Then a few light taps with a hammer on the back side should make it come off.
