Problem opening HTML files?

I went to create an HTML page and when I saved it with the .HTML extension, it didn't save as so. It stayed a .doc extension type file. I clicked properties and it says HTML, but the icon is notepad and the open brings of the code to edit in notepad.
Problem fixed. Thank you Ben. You will get points when I can select best answer.
