PHILIPS TV LATE 2006 - Firmware updated made before HDMI 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 came out
Sony Blu-ray Player - Updated to latest firmware didn't work with original firmware either.

I bought a Sony BDP-s560 and tried to hook it to my 42" TV ((bought December of 2006)) a Philips 42PF9631D/37 it's 1080i/720P which is listed as supporting HDCP & has two HDMI ports.
I am able to get a nice blu-ray signal via the Component cables and the TV 1080i. I can see menus, watch both DVD & Blu-ray discs that way. However, when trying to use the HDMI output first of all in the menu it will NOT allow me to select HDMI - only component or Svideo. Second if I remove the component cables (or) leave them in but switch the TV to the HDMI input and turn on the Blu-ray player I do see the sony start up Blu-ray screen ~ just like it does on via Component output. But then the screen turns to snow & switches back & forth between snow and black screen. I found & read in the manual where it says that it's starting with 1080P and testing all the way down to 480i but my screen never dials it in it's always snowy signal or no signal black screen. The reason I want to get HDMI working is for the upconverting of DVDs and to make sure the blu-ray's player works.
Here's what I've done to test.
=TV's HDMI PORT(s): The TV has two HDMI ports but unfortunately about 1 month ago one of them took a surge from the cable box and it's now dead. So I can ONLY test on this TV with the one working HDMI port. But I get an excellent signal via the new HD Cable box so I don't think the problem lies with the TV's HDMI port itself (perhaps it's ability to support higher level HDMI...)
=HDMI Cables: I have two sets of HDMI cables. I tried both they do the same thing; they show the start up screen then nothing after no matter how long I leave it set up.
=Could be a bad HDMI output on the Blu-ray Player: - Though I know this is unlikely since it's possible I wanted to include it on my list. If I don't find a more likely answer I will have to find a way to test it on another TV or monitor to be sure.
=Firmware: Is updated to the latest version.
=The 1080P/24FPS setting: is shut to OFF.
=Are there other settings I can adjust that could be causing this?[/B] In the Menu I went one by one through each setting and tried it's various positions such as auto, on, off or more specific labeled options. However, maybe for this TV I need some things turned way down or done in combination that I didn't know to try ANYONE have any thoughts there. Again it's a Late 2006 TV though I don't have the manufacturing date precisely it has to be Pre-December 5th 2006. 1080i/720P if that affects any settings (again it won't even let me SELECT HDMI so i can't change the output to 1080i or 720P) it simply won't let me into do that? Is that normal?
=HDMI 1.1 VS HDMI 1.3: I read a few pages back where someone mentioned that the TV would have to support HDMI 1.3 in order for the (BDP-s560) model to work with it. IS THIS CORRECT?
If that's what the problem is (The TV was ordered first week of December 2006 and looks like 1.2 standards didn't come out until November of 2006 so my guess is that the Philips TV is HDMI 1.1 ...
Can anyone help me nail this down. I rented a Blu-ray from Redbox last night and via Component it was absolutely stunning! Even @ 1080i it was like watching the movie out of my window
So i'm not entirely displeased if that's what i'm stuck with. But... I need to figure out what the problem is.
I've read on several forums that there seems to be some issues with (Magnavox/Philips TVs - older) connecting to Sony Blu-ray players... Which leads me to think it's that my TV can't support HDMI 1.3 as the problem.
