COLUMBUS, Ohio—On the evening of Ariel Castro's death, prison guards falsified logs and didn't properly complete rounds, according to a state report released Thursday.
The review by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction also raised the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation in the death of the convicted kidnapper and rapist, who was found hanging in his cell on Sept. 3 at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, south of Columbus.
According to the report, video footage showed that corrections officers missed a number of rounds between 3 p.m. and when Castro was discovered hanging from a sheet attached to a cell window at 9:18 p.m. DRC policy for special inmates such as Castro requires corrections officers to conduct rounds at least every half-hour, according to the report.
The report also stated there were several falsified entries in log books during that same six-hour period.
When Castro was found hanging in his cell, his pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles, according to the report. While the relevance of this is "unclear," the report stated, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was notified "for consideration of the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation."
Castro was sentenced Aug. 1 to life plus 1,000 years after the three women he imprisoned escaped from his house in May.
The review also found Castro was paranoid that someone was tampering with his food while in prison. He claimed that he flushed his food down the toilet, the report stated.
Documents were also found in his cell in which Castro generally complained about verbal harassment from prison staff and other inmates, according to the report.
However, the report concluded, “there appears to be no known, substantiated motivation for the self-inflicted death.”
