Previewing Sounds

Hello, I bought my HTC Hero yesterday and I am still muddling around trying to learn its ins and outs. I am attempting to select new ringtones and notifications sounds. When I pull up the list of ringtones and press one to hear it, instead all I get are several harsh beeps. It does this for every ringtone and notification sound. Is there a way I can disable/fix this so that I can hear the actual sounds? If I make a selection, I still do not here a sound when I get a notification.

Anyone know what is wrong?
 
Edit: All sounds are beeps now. Someone I have managed to mess up all audio on my phone.

Edit: fixed it. Reformated the SD card and rebooted. Did the trick.
