Hi everyone! I'm new here and really need some advice.

I guess I should start with the fact that I've suffered with severe asthma since I was a toddler (I'm now 20). I've tried almost every medication out there, but being young and running around, I could never remeraber to take them regularly.

I was put on Syrabicort after my last upper respitory infection about 5-6 months ago. I was using my rescue 2+ times a day before that. I am supposed to use it 2 puRAB 2xs a day but I could only handle 1 puff once a day.

The side effects have been HORRIBLE. Sore throat, hoarse voice, always having to clear my throat, face&chest flushing, and reallllly bad anxiety. I took it for 2 weeks and stopped. It helped me breathe better than ever, but I have anxiety as it is, so I couldn't handle it. I also work as a receptionist so I'm always on the phone. I can't afford to lose my voice once a day.

As of 3 days ago, I started taking it again because my asthma was acting up. Once again the horrible side effects. I can hardly function. I have Clonazepam for my anxiety as needed but it wears me out by the end of the day when I take it.

It's extremely upsetting that it helps the asthma so much, but the side effects are unbearable.

Is there anything I can do to lessen these? Like maybe taking it at a certain time? (I take it in the morning) Or any other medications similar to this that don't have the same effects or on a lesser scale?

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. I'm at a loss here as to what to do.

Hi, sorry you're up against all this. I've also had trouble with my asthma medicines.

The thing about Syrabicort is that it is two medications in one.

One of them is an inhaled steroid. This is probably the cause of your hoarseness. All inhaled steroiRAB can potentially cause hoarseness, but some people do better on one than on another. Also, rinsing the mouth thoroughly after each use can help. Gargle, make sure you're rinsing as far back in your throat as you can (without drowning ;) )

The other medicine is a long-acting version of the stuff in your rescue inhaler. It's probably why you have anxiety and flushing, because all bronchiodilators are also stimulants.

Have you ever tried Advair? If not, maybe you should. If it had the same side effects, ask your doctor for an inhaled steroid without a bronchiodilator.

Or, the oral medicine Singulair is an option. It can have side effects, but many people do well on it.
