The election of 1860 reflected the deep divisions within the country. Lincoln was the nominee of the Republican Party. The Democratic party split in two, however, over the issue of slavery. The Northern Democrats nominated Stephen A. Douglas, and the Southern Democrats nominated John C. Breckinridge. Also, there was a Constitutional Union party that nominated John Bell. Lincoln won a plurality of the popular vote and a majority of the electoral vote, and therefore was elected President.
The election of 1864, which was held during the Civil War, saw Lincoln running for re-election against George B. McClellan, the candidate of the Democratic party.
