Pre-show grooming without bathing your horse?

When it's winter here I "spot bathe" my black and white paint horse. I take a bucket with water and some shampoo. I take a hard bristle brush and I get the bristles wet and I brush the hair backwards(or in the opposite direction it's growing) but not too hard so it doesn't get too sudsy or whatever. Then I take a wash cloth and get it wet wipe it back the right way. The I let it dry and I take a shedding blade and brush it so it doesn't look all weird. It works alright, pretty good when you get it down pat.
 
I'm going to a horse show on Sunday, can't bathe my horse this weekend at all because it'll be too cold. I was planning on leaving him out saturday night with a sleazy and tail bag to keep him as clean as possible, then brushing him really good and washing his legs at the show grounds in the morning. He's a dark bay with a blaze and two small white socks so he won't be hard to clean.

Also we're just doing the pleasure classes (Western and English Pleasure and Halter) for fun, and the games (Barrels, Poles, etc.) competitively so he doesn't have to be perfectly groomed.

I don't have access to a heated barn or anything like that, so bathing is really not an option, besides just his white socks with a bucket and sponge at the show in the morning. I'll do any other mud or dirty spots then too.

Basically, any tips or tricks you have to share, that'd be great! Links are good too. :)
