Pre-Modern Crime Rates?

I know it is hard to get an accurate answer here, but does anyone have an idea what the crime rates of Europe and Asia were before the Modern Era? I'm mainly interested in violent crime rates. I'm sure it varied, but I have at times heard it said we are more violent and at times heard we are less violent. I can only seem to find 20th century data, and even then most of it is post-WW2. My guess is that compulsory schooling probably had some effect on increasing obedience and passivity and improved standards of living have discourage violence for numerous reasons.
