I'm a freshman currently, and I'm a bit behind on the whole internship trend. Common sense says that Biology/Pre-med students should focus on bio-science and bio-research related internships. However, a handful of people tell me that medical schools prefer well-rounded (experience in a variety of fields/majors) individuals; in other words, prospective students should diversify their skills/experience.
I would like to get started on summer internships and I have a list of promising ones to start applying to, but these internships do not exactly involve bio-science research. They deal much with of public health and public health policy.

To sum up my question, I would like advice as to whether I should place too much focus on non-research related experience. Is it preferable to have a half-and-half resume of research and non-research, or one predominantly of bio-research experience.
