Pre K or Kindergarten? How do you know when to wait?

My son, who will be five in September, is supposed to start kindergarten in the fall. His preschool director said that because of my son's "score" on a kindergarten readiness assesment she gave him, he would be better off with another year of preschool or a pre-K program. In most of the areas tested, he scored at or above his age level, but his fine motor skills (writing and drawing) are lagging. He's only been trying to write his name for a few weeks (no interest in it until lately) but can write the letters so they are mostly recognizable. He's also left-handed. Socially, she says he's doing great. Am I missing something? I though the social aspect was more important for starting school. So, I'm torn and not sure we can afford to have two kids in preschool next year. Are there clear benefits to waiting for just one area to "catch up," or should we focus on those things and go ahead with our plans for kindergarten? Anyone have experience to share? Thanks!
