Pre and Post workout nutrition??!! HELP!?

I do a full body workout 4 times a week, I usually eat a meal consisting of complex carbs and protein an hour before my workout, then immediately after I have a protein shake with some kind of fruit (usually half a banana) then about an hour later I eat another full meal....is this the right way to do it? I want to retain my muscle but lose fat. Also, how does it work with HIIT?
