1. A boad 44 inches long is cut into two pieces. The long piece is three times the length of the short piece. What is the length of each piece?

2. Bob and bill together ear $66. Bill earned $6 more than twice as much as Bob. How much did each earn?

3. Steve worked Monday and Tuesday and earned a total of $212. He earned $30 more on Tuesday than he did on Monday. How much did Steve earn each day?
 
1. let l=long piece and s=short piece
long piece is three times the length of the short piece so l=3s
l+s=44 and we know l=3s
so we get 3s+s=44
4s=44
s=11

l=3s so l=3(11) so therefore l=33
short piece is 11 inches and long piece is 33 inches.

2. let bob=x and bill=y
Bob and bill together earn $66 meaning x+y=66
Bill earned $6 more than twice as much as Bob means y=6+2x
substitute equation for y into x+y=66
so we get x + 6 + 2x=66
which becomes 3x+6=66
3x=60 so x=20
so bob earns $20

going back to our previous equation y=6+2x
we now know x=20 so y=6+2(20), so we get y=6+40
meaning bill earns $46

3. let m=monday and t=tuesday
m+t=212
He earned $30 more on Tuesday than he did on Monday so we get the equation t=30+m
substitute this equation into m+t=212 to get m+30+m=212
which becomes 2m + 30=212
2m=182 so m=91
so on monday he earns $91

t=30+m and m=91
so we get t=30+91
so on tuesday he earns $121
