The oatmeal canister is cylinder. It has a diameter of 3 1/4 inches and height of 7 inches. Which is closest to the surface area of the oatmeal canister?
a) 8.3 square inches
b) 17 square inches
c) 71 square inches
d) 88 square inches
 
Remember, D*pi = circumference.
Oh yeah, never use mixed numbers. Most teachers hate them as you go on to higher math.
13/4*pi = 13/4pi

Now, find the area.
(13/4)/2 = 13/8 <--radius

pi(r^2) = area
pi(169/64) = area

Surface area for cylinder:
2(Area of Base) + Circumference of Base(Height) = Surface Area

13/4pi(7) + 2(pi)(169/64) = Surface Area (Remember to use in.^2
