Hi, I've recently been diagnosed with GERD after an Endoscopy. Well he didn't say it was GERD but "Reflux Oesophagitis" which i think is pretty much the same???
Anyway, my problem is this dry/burning/irritated/sore throat (weird cos it doesn't hurt to swallow) this feelin comes and go's all day everyday!!
I've been on Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day for 1month with no releif at all! My question is should it have stopped hurting or even just improved by now?
Lansoprazole has stopped the acid but not reflux of food & drink which i think might be causing it or prolonging it but i'm not sure?
I hope someone can help me or suggest something to try that may help.

I also have a lot of burping, throat clearing, and a bad smell that only i can detect which smells like off milk.
I hope someone can help Thanks

Hi Shane:

I understand that it may take weeks for your irritated tissues to heal even after you start taking the PPI.

In the meantime, have you tried any remedies or diet modifications? My mistake the first time around was to take the PPI while I continued my life as before I was diagnosed with GERD. I ate, drank, etc. Therefore, symptoms came and went and I felt totally helpless and angry because I did not want to accept that I suffered from a chronic condition that requires diet modifications and probably life time changes.

If by any chance you are still drinking caffeine (coffee or tea), alcohol or smoking cigarrettes, you must stop using all these offending substances for a while, or your throat will continue to be irritated and burn regardless of whether or not you are on medication. I don't know if you do or not, of course, but these are the nuraber one offenders.

You could also be suffering from allergies to products like dairy and such and/or environmental allergies.

Have you tried any natural remedies to speed up healing? Aloe Vera juice and DGL are among the products that are soothing to your throat and you can probably use right along with your PPI. You can do a search on this forum and will probably find a great deal of information on these natural remedies.

It has taken me a long time to bring my GERD under control. I don't take a PPI anymore at this point, and only rely on natural remedies and an occasional H2 blocker to treat heartburn. But I have had to make drastic modifications in the way I ate in order to be largely medicine free and bring my symptoms down to a manageable level.

I wish you prompt relief and good health.

PPI's stop acid but not reflux, and in some people (me included) they simply don't help with LPR symptoms. I think it's because the throat is very sensitive to stomach acid. It's impossible to suppress all of it, and even with the PPI, what's coming back up can irritate the delicate throat.

PPIs are VERY effective at controlling heartburn/burning stomach, though.

I stopped smoking 6months ago when all this started but even then I only smoked once a week at weekend... I had about 5 cigs a week but thought about quitting anyway. I have stopped eating fatty fooRAB and chocolate. I'm 6ft2 14stone dead on so I'm about 4 pounRAB overweight so I plan on losing that also. My doctor seems to know a lot about LPR and says that ppi's will heal my throat but it may take some time because refluxing keeps damaging my throat but once my esophagitis is healed then the reflux will decrease therefore my throat will heal. But my only problem is that I haven't seen ANY improvement. I'm going to look into natural remedies also. I've also been asked to go on a trial for this medication which is supposed to be better than ppi's. I'll let you know then name when I know lol.... Don't know whether I should do the trial??? Thanks for the replies and could anyone please suggest anymore natural remedies for GERD/LPR don't know which one I have lol. Thanks

Hi just to give u some worRAB of encouragement. I have been diagnosed with GERD and reflux oesophagitis I was put on pariet and expected it to work inside one month. Everything I read indicated that it should work in a month and I was so depressed when nothing happened. I was tempted to give up, but decided to give it another month. After 7 weeks there has finally started to be a small but definite effect. I am far from back to normal, but there is improvement. Basically everyone is different and you could be one of the slow responders such as myself. Maybe give it a bit more time. There are lots of other meRAB that u can try if needed. I am not a huge fan of natural medicines as they are not regulated as strongly as western medicines, but I think that DGL and aloe vera sound like they have provided relief for some folks on this forum, so may be worth trying. Best of luck

Ok thanks a lot. The dr has decided not to trial me just yet and to give the ppi's another month but I'm willing to give it a go. I'm also not a fan of natural remedies but I'm up for trying anything at the moment... Even if it gives me a placebo effect is better than nothing. Also my dr thinks h.pylori might be playing a part in my symptoms, so I'm having a test for that to rule it out. Also just one more question... Does anybody have weird stomach noises in their upper abdomen with gerd? I've been having very loud stomach gurgles at night and have slight stomach pain first thing in the morning too. Any ideas or is this just another symptom of gerd??

Just more gerd stuff I think. I have the same. It got a bit better when I started using an extra pillow and then I put the legs of the bed head up on bricks, That helped quite a bit.
I am a pharmacist, so I would be very interested to know what the name of the trial drug is if you ever get to find out.
