I'm working with my Pulmonologist and Gastroenterologist right now. I get a chronic cough from asthma and from reflux. My cough has been bad lately. I thought it was just asthma, but it turns out that I'm also refluxing again. I have tried all the PPI's out there. Prevacid Solutabs 30mg twice per day helped, but didn't totally get things under control. I'm currently on Kapidex 60 that is a time-release version of the Prevacid (same active ingredient). I've also had a Nissen Fundoplication that has evidently "slipped" and isn't working like it did for the first year. (I had a bug last fall that had me vomiting violently. I assume that factored into this.)

Anyway, I'm out of typical options. I've added Reglan temporarily. My next step is to go on an additional PPI. Basically it is the equivalent of taking PPI's three times per day. I've read a lot about using other supplements with PPI treatment (Zantac and Gaviscon being frequently recommended), but I've never heard of taking three max strength PPI's per day. Anyone out there had this prescribed?

By the way, I still sleep on an incline and follow a modified diet.

you poor thing, i hope you get some relief....i am so darn frustrated and miserable with this relentless gerd.

Thanks marigoldgirl, it is helpful to be able to commiserate with people who understand. Reflux can be frustrating, especially when you are doing everything "right". I think there are many of us who are in the same "boat" here.

This scares me because my reflux affects my breathing. I HAVE to find things to keep it under control. I know I'm in the minority with this symptom, but reflux takes so many forms in how it makes itself known.

Thanks again.

I feel for you mountain reader. Although i have only aspirated in my lungs a few times and that was awful, i am mainly and extremely concerned about my esophagus tearing and me bleeding to death or something. This is awful. It is good to come here and see others opinions, suggestions, etc. It id frustarting that what works for so many of us, doesn't work for others, etc.... very trial and error.

It is amazing the different things reflux can do to an individual. I get red in my left eye every time i have a bad flare up (daily anymore) and my left ear will burn and the drs are like "wow, really?"...yeah, really, this is happening. Although i haven't had your surgery (haven't even discussed w/ dr as i don't know if i'm open to that option since success seems varied and i've had this for 7 months) and i still haven't tried prevacid or aciphex...it seems like overall i just do not respond to ppis well, and if i do its short lived and back to norm.

So, thats why i'm finishing my xanax taper (anxiety med) that is only approved by fda for 8 weeks use but i was on it for 3 years everyday and told its completely safe. Well, thats a lie from other things i've had and i'm truly wondering if this gerd was onset by this corabined with other factors. Benzodiazepines are scientifically known to relax the LES. If i will ever heal from the damage who knows.

Anyways, i know we are in different boats but both in pain and i wish you a good day. Nice to come here and have support (albeit i wish i had a success story like so many others here...but maybe one day:)

MountainReader: I'm sorry your Nissen failed. I only had relief for 2 months after mine. Knock on wood, Prilosec OTC twice daily works pretty well for me now. I haven't heard of anyone taking a PPI three times a day, but maybe some Drs. precribe them when twice a day isn't enough. I used to take Pepcid AC before each meal and at bedtime. It's not a PPI though. I hope you find something to relieve the pain and breathing problems.

Since you have taken Pepcid, do you know what the maximum allowable dose would be?

Did you take 10 mg three times a day, more or less?

Pepcid is an H2 blocker which is not as potent or effective type of drug. What made you decide to switch to the PPI?

I switched to the PPI's when I had tried all OTC options and they weren't effective. I've used varying dosages over the years. I've used them as "supplements" with PPI's with some limited success. I'm to the point that something is better than nothing when it comes to controlling my reflux symptoms.

As for the PPI's, I've basically been on max dosages twice per day for several years. I even tried at one point to back off a bit, but things got worse.
