So recently, my family and I were given a 6-month old puppy - a toy poodle - chihuahua cross named Toby. My mum doesn't want him living inside as he isn't toilet trained and we have carpet and therefore she doesn't want to put up with the bother of cleaning and also, the dog is "my responsibility".
So he came with a crate but the thing is, he's lived inside it all of his previous life meaning that he's eaten, slept and done his business in the same place. But with us, my parents don't want him doing his business all over our garden where we could step on it and we want to potty-train it to do his business in a newspaper covered tray we have provided him. Whenever we see him sniffing around we move him there and tell him to do his business, however he never does and yet when we're not watching him, he does his business on the lawn.
Also, we recently cleaned the crate so there are no more poo stains on it however he keeps sniffing at it? But the question I'm asking is HOW do we potty train him so that he does his business in one spot without us telling him to. What I mean is, how do we train him so that with or without us, he does he does business in a designated spot.
My mum also suggested we let him eat his breakfast and then put him in the crate and close the door until he does what he needs to then reward him but how do we get him to go there by himself?
Sorry this is so long, but any help would be immensely appreciated! Also, how are we supposed to clean his dried tears, clip his nails and brush his teeth, just out of curiosity. Thank you!
