There isn't much of a difference, because puppies will alternte between whines, barks, and cries. If it is extreely consistent, you may consider letting him out to his pee area, giving him 3 chances to pee, and putting him back in.

Most dogs can be very loud.

Most likely a small sized crate.

I'm glad you're deciding to crate train your pup! It's a great tool for those that use it correctly.

How old will this puppy be when you bring them home? When a puppy is 3 months old or younger the puppy cannot hold its bladder very long at all. The best thing to do is make sure you take your doggy out as often as you can and puppy whines can range in volume so if you are a heavy sleeper you may want to set your alarm clock to wake you up 2-3 hours after the pup has been crated to take out for a potty break.

You will be able to tell the difference between "I want attention" whine and "potty" whine. Most likely the first few days while you're potty training, your pup may not even give you any indication that it has to pee. Its brain doesn't realize it has to pee til it's pretty much already dripping on the floor (this in reference to a 2 month or 3 month old puplet.) You just have to keep taking the dog out so that it has no opportunity to make the accident in the house to begin with. That will make your potty training much easier!

Make sure you do not crate your dog for more than a few hours at a time (with the exception of overnight once your pup is housetrained and a few months older in able to hold it throughout the night.) Also never use the crate for punishment, that way puppy will learn to love the crate instead of fear it.

Crates come in 3 sizes usually (some come in more but these are the most common) - small medium and large. A Shitzu is definately a small breed and thus a small sized crate would be fine (76cm x 48cm x 53cm is the size of the iCrate I would use for a shitzu)! No extra small if they have them, just small. Medium crate would be ok if it is adjustable. You do not want the crate to be too big or else puppy will go potty on the other side of the crate. The crate should only be big enough for puppy to stand straight, turn around comfortably and sit/laydown.

Hope this helps! And Good luck with your new addition!

Basically the best thing you can do is make sure your puppy pees before bed, then let it out every once in awhile through the night. If you let a puppy out when its whining it will start to know...when I whine, they let me out, whether it has to pee or not. Just like a baby for the first little while it might cry for a long time at first, just because...its all new to them. Some puppies will cry louder than others, my staffie wakes the neighbors, by border collie x was very quiet about his complaining. Just remember when picking out a crate if its too big they'll pee inside it. You can get a bigger one for when it grows and just put up a wall if available, or put a box or something in it to take up the extra room. Good Luck!
