potential nerve damage in back? surgery? How long

I've had serious problems in my lower legs (shin area) for the past few years. I finally went to a neurologist and he thinks that my back problems is what has been causing these leg problems due to nerve damage. It makes sense because when I go over the past few years, even when I'm not using my legs, like just lifting upper body (using my back) my legs keep getting worse. If this were the case would surgery be an option? Could it be potentially dangerous? How long would I be out post op if surgery was necessary? Any info would be great. Thanks.

BTW I am getting tests done in the next week, but I just want to see if I can get some info beforehand.
