Billy,
you got a lot of advices here - they all very usefull. I have no idea what would I do without my grabbers, stools, shower chair and more.

I had L-4, L-5 S-1 fusion (posterior-interiour) with instrumentation and cages. I had my hip bone harvested, prosthesis. I had metal plate for pelvic area and metal clips for SIJ. Decompression/laminectomy.
My surgery was 9 hours. I had another one done 6 weeks ago. More levels were fused and removing old hardware. Also decompression and lami and some other work.

Good luck to you! Who is doing your surgery and where?
Linda

Billy,
you deserved to be lazy now, enjoy your movies!:)
You are very right about your job; take day at the time and see how you heal and what the results of surgery will be.
Than you can worry about going back to work.

Do you have somebody home who will be able to take care of you after you come home? I mean it: take care of you. You will need a lot of care for the first at least 2-3 weeks. If you have nobody usually DRs recommend rehab for a while. You will need help to get up from bed (like a log, literally, it's very important), put your clothes on, take a shower, cook your meals for you, etc.

Hi so you had Dr Rosenblum,me too in 1995.that probably why he doesn't do the hardware thing he has Dr.Phair do it.they must work together on surgery.Riverview seemed nice.are the nurse nice or a pain you know where?

I was the same as you prior to my surgery six month ago so I busied myself in preparing for my recovery, i.e., bought a Food Saver and made food and vacuum packed it for at least the first month(my hubby doesn't cook), asked people on this board what types of food is the best to eat to encourage fusion and what to stay away from, got my house in order and went through the list of Post Op supplies that's listed here and asked my PT what I'd need and got them and actually I came down to a garbage bag for the ride home ( makes getting in and our of the car a breeze and less painful), extra pillows to support your back when you lay on your side or to put on each side of you while on your side, a walker, cane, commode rails to help you get up, a grabber, shower chair, one of those removable hand rails that you see on the informercials for the shower walls(they come in different lengths) and tongs used for wiping places you can't bend to clean. Check out the list and see what you might use especially if you live in a two story home it's full of advice that I've used and will be helpful to you too not to mention getting your mind off THAT DATE! God Bless and keep us informed.

Billy, make sure that you have a silk PJ bottoms or robe or silk sheets. I know it sounRAB crazy but they are slick and it easier to slide/move from your back to your side when you do the log roll to get out of the bed. I have had 4 back surgeries and this has been the best tip I have ever recieved.

Also when you come home from the hospital, make sure you have a step stool to clirab in and out of the car, ziploc bags in case you get sick in the car because you can zip it right up with little mess, and lastly but a kitchen trash bag on your seat so that you slide and move easily in and out of the car.
