Hello everyone,

My name is Daniel, and I'm here to explain my fathers problems with his lower back and legs in an effort to try new things to help him with his chronic pain suggestions, ideas, and questions are all welcome.

In mid to late 2006 my father was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. It arose out of complaints of nurabness on his feet after prolonged standing/walking/sitting - he could walk at a slow pace for only 7 minutes before needing to sit and rest. The nurabing and tingling sensation were higher in severity in any of the above mentioned activities the longer they were executed. The problems then developed in to a strong burning sensation in his feet when trying to sleep.

After speaking with the Neurosurgeon it was his claim that the tingling and burning would be able to be taken care of, but the pain would have to be dealt with (for lack of better worRAB).

His surgery was July 23, 2007. I should note, now that he was 61 at the time of the surgery. He'll be 63 this Septeraber.

For about 2 weeks, he had relief of most symptoms. The pain being the only one symptom that remained, but he's a tough guy! He handled it!

After that two week mark, we noticed a small seemingly painful lump begin to form in the middle of the incision area - and the returning of the nurabness and tingling. All doctors we saw stated that it would get better over time. Specific terminolgy eludes me at the moment. Roughly 8 months after the surgery, pre-surgery symptoms redevelop (Nurabness and tingling, with increased pain on the lump). So here I am on June 3, 2009..

For pain my father takes either a Tylenol 2 or 3 and can't take anything stronger because it causes him stomach pains. He couldn't handle Lyraca (Our neurologist suggested taking as many as 8 per day when my father could barely handle 1..)

He takes 600mg of Tagretol per day for a dormant brain tumour, 30mg Oxazepam to sleep (even that doesn't help much anymore - the burning sensation is overpowering).

We've tried ancupuncture, a nateuropathic treatment, and massage - and custom insoles which now seem to be doing more harm than good.

We have a treadmill and he does his best to walk an accumulated 25-30 minutes a day and he pushes 10 minutes, sometimes longer. We even do a series of exerices which appear to relieve symptoms on a very minor scale.
--> He lays on his back I bend his leg and bring his knee towarRAB his chest. Do this about 10x per side 2-3 times a week

I don't think I've forgotten anything..

Though perhaps I should mention that my grandmother (his mother) reported many if not all of the symptoms of my fathers - so the possibility of genetics is present. The only discovery on her front was when we went on a trip to Cuba, doctors there discovered one leg was slightly shorter than the other.

Questions? Comments? Anything? I can't stand to see him in pain anymore!
