My brother recently moved halfway across the world, and he left me with a tank filled with various freshwater fish. A few weeks ago, I noticed that some of the fish must have been breeding, because there were tiny babies hiding in the plants. I rescued them and put them in a separate tank, but then I noticed several fish of the same kind had swollen bellies. I thought they might be pregnant since not all of the fish of that type were fat, so I went ahead and separated the ones I thought were pregnant.
Anyway, I got online to try and find out how long I would need to wait before the eggs were laid, and I've come across some contradictions. Some people claimed that a fat Danio is a female, but that the swollen belly does not mean she's pregnant. Others said it did. Opinions? How can I tell if these fish are pregnant, and if they are, what must I do for them?
I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about fish; they're not my thing, and if I could find someone who wanted my brother's, I'd give them away in a second. That said, of course I'll do my best to care for them while they're in my possession. I want to do what is best for these fish, but it's been about a week and a half since I put the pregnant females in the other tank, and they haven't laid eggs or changed in any way. I'm wondering now if they're pregnant at all, but I don't want to release them back into the main tank if there's even a chance that they are. Help?
