Hello all:wave: I am new here to healtrabroadoarRAB.
I have had GERD pretty much all my life (my parents think I was probably born with reflux problems, just no one really took me seriously until I was about 12 that I was really having a lot of problems).
So at 13 or 14 years of age it was discovered I had a hiatal hernia and was refluxing considerably, and then at 15 I underwent my first nissen fundoplication which worked pretty well for me for quite a few years.
I know there's never any for-sure guarantee in medicine when it comes to some stuff, so I knew that there was the possibility back then that the wrap could possibly come undone or fail in the future.
Well since the nissen being done, I have developed early Barrett's (diagnosed about almost 5 years ago I'd say), and I've also had 2 children within a 22 month span of each other in the past 3 years.
Prior to becoming pregnant with my first child I noticed that I was starting to have some of the old problems I did prior to having the first nissen done years back, but when I started the whole testing process with my doctors (the PH study, manometry, all that good stuff) I found out I was expecting and had to put everything on hold.
Then as I was getting back into the whole testing process once again after my first child was born, I found out I pregnant again.
So now I am NOT expecting and am in the process of going through having all the tests done to see if I need to have another nissen done again.
So far, the EGD showed this past week that I again have a hiatal hernia, and on the doctor's report he took some biopsies. I also did a barium swallow as well which the radiologist doing that one said I indeed was refluxing.
But I guess what my question here is (cause I don't go and see my surgeon to talk over all of my test results for a few more weeks), is when the radiologist was doing the upper barium test he said he didn't see any hernia going on, yet the surgeon who did the EGD on me just 1 day prior said he saw one clearly down there.
So I guess what I'm wondering, is it possible that maybe the hernia just wasn't as obvious on the barium test?
I should also mention that the radiologist who did the barium test pretty much completed the whole test within I'd say 10 minutes. So it wasn't like he stood there and took his time and analyzed everything.
Also, I was wondering what other people's experiences on here were with having a 2nd nissen done.
I was told years back by one surgeon that with a 2nd nissen they usually have to do the surgery openly and not laprascopically. But the surgeon whom I'm seeing now (who is extremely knowledgeable and experienced with doing re-do's and all that that goes along with the nissen and GERD and all that) said that he'd be able to do the 2nd nissen on me if that's what neeRAB to be done laparoscopically.
I look forward to hearing what others have to say about their experiences, and if anyone can shed some light on the whole one doctor seeing the hiatal hernia and the other not seeing it on another test, I'd greatly appreciate that
