Porting my verizon number to Straight Talk Cell company?

I have 12 months left on my verizon contract. I am going to pay the ending termination fee of 140 which I was told, and my remaining balance of 131.33. How do I go about porting my cell number from verizon to straight talks cell service? I want to keep the same number. Do I need to port the number first and than end my contract with verizon, so I can still use a cell phone until it gets processed at Straight Talk. How long does that process take? Once I port my number, should I purchase my straight talk phone first and than End my Verizon Contract? Straight Talk said it's a minimum of 2 days for them to port my number. I just want to be able to use a phone with my number until I completely activate a stragiht talk phone? If I purchase a straight talk phone with a 30 dollar calling card plan directly from the straight talk website, can I renew my card at Walmart, which offers Straight Talk, or can I just add the minutes back over the phone with Straight Talk? Any information about porting my verizon number to Straight talk and the purchasing and activation process of a straight talk phone will be helpful. Thanks. I just want to not end my contract with verizon so I can still use a phone up until I completely activate straight talk. I have up until February 12th to complete this process before my next verizon billing cycle, so I don't have to pay another remaining balance.
